After-School Online Hindi Class

This is an informational page for the new January session of the online after-school Hindi Class for Portland/Beaverton/Hillsboro area students. High School and Middle School students are eligible. Students who are enrolled in other/private schools within the Portland Metro area are also eligible.

There is no fees to attend the class, but the registration is required. Please use this link to register/enroll.

The classes will start on Jan 20th, 2025 and will run until the end of the semester, with the expectation to continue for the next school year session in some form – either online, or as part of the school curriculum.

All classes are online (on Zoom). There will be no classes on Beaverton School District non-school days.

  • Level 1 – Tuesdays 5-6 PM, starting Jan 20th
  • Level 2 – Wednesdays 5-6 PM, starting Jan 21st
  • Level 3 – Thursdays 5-6 PM, starting Jan 22nd

Below is a compilation of some Frequently-Asked-Questions. If you have any further questions, please send us an email at hindiclass@hindisangam.org, and we will respond promptly. We will update this page with further Q&A as we get more questions.

Who is organizing the class?

Class is organized by ICA and Hindi Sangam community volunteers. It is supported by Beaverton School District and other school districts.

What are deadlines to register/enroll?

Online/Zoom classes start on Jan 20th. Enrollment deadline is Jan 10th.

What Level is the class offered at and what are Prerequisites?

At this time we are offering the class at 3 levels.

Level 1 : Beginner - No prerequisites

Level 2: Intermediate - Prerequisites - Must be able to read/write/speak all alphabets and matras. Must be able to form words, and speak and comprehend simple sentences.

Level 3: Advanced - Prerequisites - Must be able to read/write/speak/understand simple sentences. Focus in the class will be on conversations, reading/writing passages, achieving proficiency and preparing for STAMP tests.

Who can attend?

Any student enrolled in Grade 7th-12th in any of the area public/private schools is eligible. If in doubt, check with us.

I have a child in 5th grade, Can he/she attend?

Any student enrolled in Grade 7th-12th in any of the area public/private schools is eligible. At this time we are unable to accommodate elementary school students. But please indicate your interest using this form  and if there are enough students, we will try to consider starting a different class.

Is there a cost for the class?

There is no cost to register for the class. Textbook will be available to borrow for the session. PDF versions of worksheets will be provided to students. Students can complete those online or print on their own.

Will I get credit for the class?

This is after school class and as such credits will not be automatically granted. However, the class prepares students to take language STAMP tests. Once students clear the STAMP test, they will get the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy. They can also apply for credits for language proficiency. Some colleges also grants credits for Seal of Biliteracy.

Is this online only or in-person?

While most classes will be Zoom/Online, we will try to have one class in the month as a in-person opportunity to interact and communicate in Hindi. Details will be provided well in advance.

What are technology requirements for students?

Students must have a laptop/tablet/chromebook device to have an online Zoom session and be able to participate in Zoom sharing. Phone screens are too small and are not effective for the class.

Students must also have a valid email that can be used for sharing class materials and the communication.

How long will the session last?

First session is Sept-Dec. Next session will be a continuation to this and will be from Feb-May.

Will I be able to move from Level 1 to Level 2 in middle of the session?

At this time, we do not have the mid-semester assessment tests to move students to the advanced class, and logistically it will be a challenge for the student to move to higher level in the middle of the session.  We expect the class level to span two semesters (full calendar year). But there may be an opportunity for students who have made exceptional progress to move to Level 2 class in the second semester.

How many hours/week would a student need to spend?

It depends on the student's abilities. But we expect that the students will spend approximately 2-3 hours in class, and additional 3-4 hours in the week for homework and language practice.

How do I get more information?

Please send email to hindiclass@hindisangam.org. Or reach out directly to Arvind Kumar (arvind@hindisangam.org)
